Have you been to Jerome? From tent city to prosperous boom town. Why did so many people moved to Jerome?
Jerome, Arizona
Jerome was built on Cleopatra Hill above a vast deposit of copper. Mining brought many people and wealth to the boom town in the late 1800′s. After 1918, uncontrolled fires in the 88 miles of tunnels under the town prompted an end to underground mining. Mining activity moved to open pit mining with dynamite blasting which rattled and cracked buildings on the hill. A large section of the town’s business segment shifted and slid down the hill — The sliding jail moved 225 feet and rests across the road from its original site. The mines closed in 1953, but the town is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families.
